Meet Rupert

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Rupert is a new foster at our home – he is a truly wonderful guy.  Rupert (formerly Rufus – anything is an impr0vement) supposedly was having between 10-15 seizures per month.  In addition, he had lost his house training and nothing they were doing could improve his situation.  As soon as Dr. Cronin looked at the vet reports, he immediately thought that Rupert needed a larger (not large) daily dose of pheno – he’s been in Dwight for 2 weeks – NOT A SEIZURE!!  And he is a perfect 63 lb., 2 year old Basset boy.  So far, he’s becoming the perfect dog.

Weekend Results

Friday, September 25th, 2009

It looks like many of you have already discovered our blog.  I love reading the first few posts as to the great time you all had at the Waddle.  When you see all the dogs that have returned and you see all the smiling owners, it makes all of us at GABR very happy.   Seeing Bassets like Faith, Caesar, Droopy, Momo and many more brings back wonderful memories.

The first question that I want to answer here is “how much did we make?”   We still have bills coming in but I would say that the weekend brought in well over $75,000.  That includes income from a number of sources but I want to cover adoptions and the Corvette Raffle.  First – we adopted out 16 Bassets over the weekend but on Monday and Tuesday, 15 new dogs came into the rescue.   Expenses started increasing right away.  The income produced by the Waddle is mandatory to the success of our group – and the need to increase that income each year is very important.

Secondly – the Corvette Raffle is not just the tickets that our supporters purchase.  Over 60 other animal rescue groups were given the opportunity to sell tickets and receive a commission on all their sales.  Once our final accounting is done, we will be sending out over $45,000 to these other organizations.  That is very, very exciting as we now have an impact on the lives of many animals.  It should make you feel really good to be a supporter of GABR.

Also, we are always looking for other 501c3 charities that would like to be involved in our Corvette Raffles.  Let me know who they are and how I can contact them.  Your help will make a difference to the future of animal rescue.

The Illinois Waddle – what a weekend!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

This is my very first attempt at using a blog – it’s our first step into the future of the web.  This will give you a forum where you can ask any question you want about GABR, its operation and its future.  Have a question about an event – ask it here.  Do you have a financial question? – ask it here.  Our group is as transparent as any animal rescue group in the country.  This will simply make us even more accessible.

My first comment has to be on this weekend’s Illinois Waddle.  It requires so much planning and time from many, many volunteers.  Each year I wonder if I have the energy for another.  Then I see this and I know exactly why we all do it –

Waddle Lineup

There is no greater sight than the beginning of the parade.  Everyone in Dwight waits for the Bassets to “March” and so do I.

I look forward to your comments and questions.  Do you have an idea for changes?  Would you like to volunteer?  Are you fluent in Twitter, Facebook, MySpace?  If you are, I need to hear from you.  GABR will have a major presence on these sights starting now.

I look forward to your comments.  Thanks for being a part of Basset rescue.
